Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir John de Graham (born 1278, died 1337) was an important Scottish noble from the 13th and 14th centuries. He came from Dalkeith, Abercorn, and Eskdale in Scotland.

John was the son of Nicholas de Graham and Mary de Strathearn. He lived during a time when Scotland was fighting for its independence from England.

He played a part in the famous Battle of Bannockburn on June 23–24, 1314. In this battle, the Scottish army fought against the English. Because he fought against England, King Edward II of England considered John an enemy. As a result, John's lands in Northumberland were taken away. King Edward then gave John's Scottish lands to Hugh le Despenser.

John also signed the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320. This was a very important letter sent to the Pope, declaring Scotland's independence. Sir John de Graham passed away on April 25, 1337.
