Sir John de Grey, born in 1300, was an important English soldier and a close helper to the King. He was known as the 1st Baron Grey of Rotherfield. His father was also named John de Grey, and his mother was Margaret de Odingsells.
He was one of the very first members of a special group of knights called the Order of the Garter. This order is still very important today.
By 1349, he became the Lord Steward. This was a top job in King Edward III's royal palace, managing everything. Sir John de Grey was a brave and successful leader. He fought well in wars against Scotland and France.
Because he was called to join the English Parliament many times between 1338 and 1357, he officially became the 1st Baron Grey of Rotherfield.
Sir John's Family Life
Sir John de Grey was married twice.
First Marriage
His first marriage was to Katherine FitzAlan. She was the daughter of Bryan FitzAlan, Lord FitzAlan. They were married shortly before 1313.
Together, they had one son:
- Sir John de Grey, who later became the 2nd Baron Grey de Rotherfield. He married Maud de Burghersh.
Second Marriage
Sir John de Grey then married Avice Marmion. She was the daughter of John Marmion, Baron of Winteringham.
With Avice, he had two more sons:
- John de Grey, also known as Marmion. He passed away in 1385 without having any children (this is what "d.s.p." means). His niece, Elizabeth, became his heir.
- Sir Robert de Grey, also known as Marmion. He married Lora St. Quintin. Their daughter, Elizabeth, married Henry FitzHugh, who was the 3rd Baron FitzHugh.
