Who Was John de Mowbray?
John de Mowbray was born on 18 October 1444. He was the only son of John de Mowbray, 3rd Duke of Norfolk and Eleanor Bourchier. His family was very important in England.
Early Life and Titles
In 1451, when John was just seven years old, he was given the title of 1st Earl of Surrey. This was a special honor for him.
Ten years later, in 1461, his father passed away. John then became the 4th Duke of Norfolk. He also inherited the important role of Earl Marshal. This job meant he helped organize big ceremonies and events for the king.
The Fight for Caister Castle
One of the most famous parts of John de Mowbray's life was his fight for Caister Castle. His father had wanted this castle, and John continued the effort.
The castle was owned by John Paston. Paston had inherited it in 1459. Even though Paston had worked for Mowbray, the Duke was determined to get the castle.
Taking the Castle
In September 1469, Duke John finally took Caister Castle. This happened after a long fight called a siege. During the siege, one of Paston's loyal servants was killed.
The Church stepped in to help. They made sure that the other people defending the castle could leave safely. This showed how serious the conflict was.
Castle Returns to Paston
John de Mowbray died very suddenly on 14 January 1476. He had seemed healthy the day before. Just one day after his death, the Paston family took Caister Castle back.
Family and Legacy
John de Mowbray married Elizabeth Talbot. She was the daughter of John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury.
They had only one child, a daughter named Anne de Mowbray, 8th Countess of Norfolk. Anne was very young, only three years old, when her father died.
Anne's Inheritance
Because John had no other children, the title of Duke of Norfolk ended when he died. His young daughter Anne inherited his earldom and all his vast lands and wealth.
The title of Duke of Norfolk was later created again in 1481 and then in 1483. The dukedom created in 1483 still exists today.
