John Sutton V facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir John de Sutton V (born February 1380 – died August 28, 1406) was an important figure in English history. He was the fourth person to hold the title of Baron Sutton of Dudley. This meant he was a powerful nobleman and the rightful owner of Dudley Castle.

John V was the son of Sir John de Sutton IV, who was the 3rd Baron Sutton. His mother was Joan, who passed away in 1408. John V married Constance Blount (died October 11, 1432). Her father was Sir Walter le Blount, a brave soldier from Barton. Sir Walter was killed in the Battle of Shrewsbury around 1402. His death was even written about by the famous playwright Shakespeare.

Early Life and Family Connections

John V came from a very old and important family. He was a descendant of Sir John de Sutton II, who was the first person in their family to be called "Lord Dudley." Sir John de Sutton II lived from about 1310 to 1359. He was also the first Baron Sutton to be called to the Parliament of England in 1342. Being called to Parliament meant he was an important advisor to the King.

Inheriting Lands and Titles

From 1397 until his death in 1406, John V gained control of lands that once belonged to the Earls of Powis. He received these lands after his great-grandmother, Isabel de Cherleton, passed away.

In 1401, during the second year of King Henry IV of England's rule, John V officially recognized the King as his lord for these lands. This act was called "doing homage." It meant he promised loyalty to the King for the lands he now controlled, including the important Dudley Castle.

After John V's Death

When John V died, his family faced some changes. His mother-in-law, Sancha de Ayala (who died in 1418), took care of his first child, John VI. John VI was only six years old at the time. Sancha de Ayala was also given control of many of John V's valuable estates.

John V was succeeded by his son, John Sutton VI. John VI later became the 1st Baron Dudley. Besides John VI, John V and Constance had other children. These included Thomas Sutton of Dudley and Jane Sutton of Dudley, who married Thomas Mainwaring. They also had Elizabeth Sutton of Dudley. It is also believed that John V had another child named Humphrey Dudley.
