Early Life and Family
John was born in 1304. His father, King James II, ruled Aragon, a powerful kingdom in what is now Spain. His mother, Blanche of Anjou, was a princess from a French royal family. Being a prince meant John was part of a very important and influential family.
A Career in the Church
Instead of becoming a king or a knight, John chose a life in the Catholic Church. This was common for younger sons of royal families during that time. It allowed them to gain power and influence in a different way.
Archbishop of Toledo
John became the archbishop of Toledo in 1319. An archbishop is a very high-ranking bishop who leads a large area of churches. Toledo was a very important city in Spain, and being its archbishop was a big responsibility. He held this position for nine years, until 1328.
Archbishop of Tarragona
In 1327, John also became the archbishop of Tarragona. This meant he was in charge of two major church areas at the same time. Tarragona is another important city in Spain, located on the coast.
Latin Patriarch of Alexandria
In 1328, John received another very important title: Latin Patriarch of Alexandria. A patriarch is one of the highest leaders in the Christian church, even above an archbishop. Although Alexandria is in Egypt, this title was mostly honorary by John's time. It showed his high standing within the church. He held both the Tarragona archbishopric and the Alexandria patriarchate until his death in 1334.
Death and Legacy
John of Aragon passed away on August 19, 1334, in Pobo, near Saragossa. He was only 30 years old. His tomb is located in Tarragona Cathedral, which shows his importance to the church in that region. He is remembered as a prince who dedicated his life to serving the church in several high-ranking roles.
