John William Hayes (April 27, 1910 – November 16, 1988) was an American baseball player. He was a talented catcher who played in the Negro leagues from 1934 to 1951. Hayes was even chosen to play in the famous East–West All-Star Game twice!
Playing Baseball
Johnny Hayes was a catcher, which is a very important position in baseball! He played for several teams in the Negro leagues. He started with the Newark Dodgers in 1934. Later, he played for the Newark Eagles, the New York Black Yankees, and finally the Baltimore Elite Giants. He played professional baseball for 17 years.
All-Star Player
Johnny Hayes was a very good player! He was so good that he was picked to play in the East–West All-Star Game twice. This special game was like the All-Star Game we have today, but it featured the best players from the Negro leagues. He played in this exciting game in 1947 and again in 1951.
Life Outside Baseball
Johnny Hayes was born in Independence, Missouri. During World War II, he served in the US Army. After a long life, Johnny Hayes passed away in Auburn Park, Illinois in 1988 when he was 78 years old.
