Johnny Moore (born March 3, 1958) is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He was a talented point guard, mostly known for playing with the San Antonio Spurs in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played college basketball for the Texas Longhorns. Johnny spent almost his entire NBA career with the Spurs. A rare illness caused his career to pause in early 1986.
College Basketball Career
Johnny Moore was a star player during his four years at the University of Texas at Austin. He started every single one of the 112 games his team played. He became the Longhorns' all-time leader in assists, with 714. An assist is when a player passes the ball to a teammate who then scores a basket.
He still holds the record for the most assists per game in a single season for a Texas men's basketball player. That season, he averaged 8.34 assists per game. Johnny also scored double-digit points in all four of his college seasons. After his senior year, he was named first-team All-Southwest Conference (SWC).
During his junior year, Johnny helped his team achieve a great 26–5 record. They even won a share of the Southwest Conference championship. They also won the 1978 National Invitation Tournament championship. The next season, Johnny helped Texas win another share of the SWC championship. They also made it to the 1979 NCAA Division I basketball tournament.
NBA Career Highlights
Johnny Moore was chosen by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1979 NBA draft. He was the 43rd player picked overall. This was a very high pick for a basketball player from the University of Texas at that time.
Over his 520 games in the NBA, Johnny averaged 9.4 points, 7.4 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.96 steals per game. A rebound is when a player gets the ball after a missed shot. A steal is when a player takes the ball away from an opponent.
Johnny recorded 20 assists in three different games during his career. One of these was in a playoff game. This is a very special achievement, as only a few players have done this in a playoff game. He also had two games where he got nine or more steals.
The San Antonio Spurs honored Johnny Moore by retiring his jersey number, "00". This means no other player on the Spurs can wear that number. It shows how important he was to the team.
Coaching Career
After his playing career, Johnny Moore became a coach. He started as an assistant coach in the NBA D-League with the Austin Toros in the 2010–11 season.
In December 2012, Johnny became the head coach for the Corpus Christi Clutch. This team was part of the American Basketball League. However, many teams in that league did not last long, including the Clutch.
In 2013, Johnny Moore became the head coach of the South Texas Stingrays. This was a new team in the ABA. The team later changed its name to the Am-Mex Swarm, and Johnny continued to coach them.
