Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Johnson City is an unincorporated community located in St. Clair County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government, like a mayor or city council. Instead, the county government helps manage things for the people living there.

The History of Johnson City

Johnson City was officially planned and mapped out in 1867. This process is called "platting." It means someone drew up the streets, lots, and public areas for the future town. The community was named after Andrew Johnson, who was the President of the United States at that time.

A post office was opened in Johnson City in 1871. Post offices were very important back then for sending and receiving letters and packages. They helped connect people and businesses. This post office served the community for many years, but it eventually closed down in 1904.
