Johnsonburg is a small town, also called a borough, located in Elk County, Pennsylvania. It is about 124 miles (200 km) northeast of Pittsburgh. It is also about 115 miles (185 km) south of Buffalo, New York.
This area is known for its good farming and lumber. In the past, many paper mills operated here. Today, the Domtar mill is still working. In 1910, about 4,334 people lived in Johnsonburg. By the 2020 census, the population was 2,404.

Johnsonburg's Paper Industry
The main industry in Johnsonburg is making paper. The biggest paper mill is owned by the Domtar Corporation. This mill was built over a century ago, in 1888.
It was first owned by the Armstrong family. Then, in 1890, they joined with Augustus Paine's paper mills. Together, they formed the New York & Pennsylvania Company.
Later, in 1925, the Curtis Publishing Company bought the mill. They published a famous magazine called the Saturday Evening Post. By 1950, this mill was thought to be the largest coated paper mill in the world.
In the late 1960s, Curtis Publishing faced problems and closed the mill. But six months later, a group of investors bought it. They formed a company called Penntech Papers. They kept the mill running for 20 more years.
In 1990, Penntech sold the mill to Willamette Industries. Then, Weyerhaeuser took over Willamette in 2002. Finally, in 2007, Domtar acquired the mill. In 2021, Paper Excellence bought Domtar.
