(The Joint List)

The Joint List is a group of political parties in Israel. Its name comes from two languages: HaReshima HaMeshutefet in Hebrew and al-Qa'imah al-Mushtarakah in Arabic. Both names mean "The Joint List."

This group was formed in 2015. It brings together four main parties that mostly represent Arab Israelis. Their main goal is to work together for the interests of Arab citizens in Israel.

The leader of the Joint List is Ayman Odeh.

What is the Joint List?

The Joint List is a political alliance. It was created in 2015 by four different parties:

  • Hadash: This party has some ideas similar to communism.
  • Balad: This party believes in social democracy and is secular, meaning it separates government from religion.
  • Ra'am: This party has an Islamist viewpoint, meaning its ideas are based on Islamic principles.
  • Ta'al: This party is considered secular and is often seen as right-wing and centrist.

Most of these parties are mainly Arab. They generally do not support Zionism, which is the movement for a Jewish state in Israel.

Why was the Joint List formed?

The Joint List was created for a few important reasons:

  • To stay in the Knesset: Israel has a rule called the "election threshold." This is the minimum percentage of votes a party needs to win seats in the Knesset (Israel's parliament). If a party gets too few votes, it doesn't get any seats. The Joint List was formed so that smaller Arab parties could combine their votes and make sure they reached this threshold. This way, they could keep their voice in the government.
  • To support other parties: The Joint List also aimed to help another political group, the Zionist Union. They wanted to help the Zionist Union replace the government led by Benjamin Netanyahu at that time.

How many seats did they win?

In the 23rd Knesset, the Joint List won 15 seats. These seats were divided among its member parties:

  • Hadash: 5 seats
  • Ra'am: 4 seats
  • Balad: 3 seats
  • Ta'al: 3 seats
