History of Jokioinen
The story of Jokioinen is closely linked to the Jokioinen estate. This large estate was started in 1562. It grew to be the biggest estate in all of Finland. This happened when Ernst Gustaf von Willebrand was the provincial governor.
In the early 1900s, the estate was very busy. It had a mill for grinding corn and a saw mill for cutting wood. There was also a brick factory, a steel plant, and even a factory that made sugar and syrup.
Later, laws were passed to help people get their own land. The crofters law in 1918 and the land reform law in 1945 changed things. Because of these laws, the big estate was divided into more than 1500 smaller homes and farms.
The rest of the estate became owned by the Finnish government in 1918. Important research centers moved to the Jokioinen estate. The Department of Finnish Plant Breeding moved there in 1928. An observatory, which is a place for studying stars, moved there in 1957.
