Jole Santelli (born 28 December 1968 – died 15 October 2020) was an important Italian politician. She was a member of the political party called Forza Italia. Jole Santelli became the President of Calabria on 15 February 2020. She held this important job until she passed away eight months later.
Early Life and Career
Jole Santelli studied Law at the Sapienza University of Rome. After finishing her studies, she became a lawyer. Later, she joined a political party called Forza Italia. This party was led by Silvio Berlusconi. In 2001, Jole Santelli was elected to the Chamber of Deputies. This is like being a member of parliament in Italy.
Government Roles
From 2001 to 2006, Santelli worked as an undersecretary at the Ministry of Justice. An undersecretary is a high-ranking official who helps a minister. She served in this role under two different governments led by Silvio Berlusconi.
She was elected to the Chamber of Deputies again in 2006, 2008, and 2013. From May to December 2013, Santelli was an undersecretary at the Ministry of Labour. She left this job when her party, Forza Italia, stopped supporting the government.
Regional Leadership
Since 2013, Jole Santelli was the main leader for Forza Italia in the Calabria region. From 2016 to 2019, she also served as the deputy mayor of Cosenza. In 2018, she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies one more time.
In December 2019, she became the main candidate for the centre-right parties. She ran for the position of President of Calabria. She won the election in 2020 with about 55% of the votes.
Passing Away
Jole Santelli passed away on 15 October 2020, at her home. She was 51 years old. She had been dealing with health issues, including cancer. Her death was caused by a heart attack and internal bleeding.
