How Jonas Ridge Got Its Name
The name Jonas Ridge has an interesting history. For a long time, people thought it was named after a man named William Barjonah Braswell. He was a soldier who fought in the American Revolutionary War. Sadly, he passed away during a sudden winter storm in 1825.
However, old records show that the name "Jonas Ridge" was used even before 1825. A land document from 1809 mentions property on "Jonas Ridge." Also, a land deal from the late 1700s talks about "Jonas Mountain" in the same area.
This suggests the name might come from someone else. It is now believed that Jonas Ridge was more likely named after John Jonas. He received a piece of land nearby in 1780. So, the name might have been around for a long time!
