About Jonathan Carroll's Life
Jonathan Carroll has some famous family members. His half-brother is the composer Steve Reich. His uncle was Leonard Sillman, a producer for Broadway shows.
Jonathan's parents were Jewish, but he grew up following the Christian Science religion. He has said he was a "troubled teenager." He went to the Loomis School in Connecticut. In 1971, he graduated with honors from Rutgers University. That same year, he married artist Beverly Schreiner. A few years later, he moved to Vienna, Austria. He started teaching literature at the American International School of Vienna. Austria has been his home ever since.
His Unique Writing Style
Jonathan Carroll's first novel, The Land of Laughs (1980), shows his special writing style. The story is told by a young schoolteacher named Thomas Abbey. He is researching a children's book author he loved when he was young.
Thomas meets the author's daughter in a small, perfect-looking town called Galen, Missouri. Everything seems normal until a dog in Galen starts talking to Thomas! The line between fantasy and reality begins to blur. Readers might wonder if they can trust what Thomas is telling them.
In his later novels, Jonathan Carroll continued to explore these ideas. He often uses characters who might not be telling the whole truth. In his stories, magic feels like a natural part of the world. One writer even said that if he were from Latin America, his books would be called "magical-realist."
Family Life
Jonathan Carroll's son, Ryder Carroll, is also well-known. Ryder invented the Bullet Journal, a popular way to organize notes and tasks.
