Jonathan Hardy (born September 20, 1940 – died July 30, 2012) was a talented actor, writer, and director. He was born in New Zealand and also worked a lot in Australia. He was known for his work in films, television shows, and on stage.

Early Life and Training

Jonathan Hardy was born in Wellington, New Zealand. He started learning to act at the New Zealand Players' Drama School. Later, he traveled to Britain to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). He was a top student there, even winning a gold medal! This led to him getting jobs with famous theatre companies like the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre.

In 1966, he returned to New Zealand with the Royal Shakespeare Company for a play called The Comedy of Errors. He stayed to help grow the theatre industry in his home country. In 1972, he moved to Australia.

A Long and Busy Career

Jonathan Hardy had a very successful career that lasted over 40 years. He acted in more than 20 films and appeared as a guest star in over 26 television series. He also performed in many TV movies and mini-series.

He especially loved working on stage. He spent a lot of time performing with major theatre companies in both Melbourne and Sydney. His roles were very different, from a Christmas play like Cinderella to serious Shakespeare plays. He even acted in operas. Jonathan Hardy was very good at many types of acting, showing his skill and ability to take on any role.

Famous Film Roles

Jonathan Hardy was in several important films. These included The Devil's Playground (1976), for which he was nominated for an award. He also appeared in the action film Mad Max, the comedy Mr. Reliable, and the musical Moulin Rouge!.

He also helped write the screenplay for the film Breaker Morant. For this, he won an Australian Film Institute award in 1980. He was even nominated for an Academy Award (also known as an Oscar) in 1981!

Jonathan Hardy won another award in 2001 for Best Short Film Performance for Camping with Camus. He also directed and wrote a movie called Backstage.

Many people around the world know him for being the voice of Dominar Rygel XVI in the science fiction TV series Farscape. Even though Farscape was filmed in Australia, it was a US production. Jonathan Hardy gained many fans from this role.

Awards and Recognition

Jonathan Hardy was recognized for his great acting.

  • In 1993, he won a Matilda Award for his performances in Romeo and Juliet and The Shaughraun.

Later Life and Passing

Jonathan Hardy had a heart transplant, which helped him live longer. He passed away at his home in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales on July 30, 2012. He was 71 years old.
