Early Life and Junior Career
Jonathan Wright was born in a town called Gilgandra, New South Wales, in Australia.
He started playing rugby league as a junior for the Northern Lakes Warriors. After that, he was signed by the Newcastle Knights team.
Professional Playing Career
Starting with the Knights and Eels
Jonathan played for the Newcastle Knights' Jersey Flegg team. This is a competition for younger players. He even played in their Grand Final in 2006.
Later, he joined the Parramatta Eels. He played for their reserve-grade team, the NSW Cup team. In 2009, he made his first appearance in the top-level NRL competition. This was in a game against his old team, the Newcastle Knights. He played a few more games that year, helping the Eels reach the 2009 NRL Grand Final. After this, he signed a contract with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.
Time with the Canterbury Bulldogs
Jonathan had a great season with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in 2012. He played 27 games and scored 14 tries. A "try" is like a touchdown in rugby league, where a player grounds the ball in the opponent's goal area.
That year, the Bulldogs won the "Minor Premiership." This means they finished first on the ladder at the end of the regular season. Jonathan also played for the Bulldogs in the 2012 NRL Grand Final. However, they lost that game to the Melbourne Storm.
Moving to the Cronulla Sharks
In August 2012, Jonathan signed a two-year contract to play for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, starting in 2013. In his first year with the Sharks, the team made it to the finals.
He played in both of their finals matches. He even scored a try in their elimination final game against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at the Sydney Football Stadium.
The next season, 2014, was tough for the Cronulla Sharks. The team finished last on the table, which means they received the "Wooden Spoon" award. This award goes to the team that finishes last in the competition.
Playing for the New Zealand Warriors
In December 2014, Jonathan signed a one-year contract with the New Zealand Warriors. He started playing for them in 2015. In July 2015, his contract was extended for another year, keeping him with the Warriors until the end of 2016.
He left the Warriors after the 2016 NRL season.
Final Years and Retirement
After leaving the Warriors, Jonathan Wright signed with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles for the 2017 NRL season.
In October 2016, before joining Manly, Jonathan also played for the Redfern All Blacks. This team competed in the NSW Koori Knockout tournament, which is a big rugby league event for Indigenous Australian players.
In August 2018, it was announced that Jonathan Wright would be retiring from professional rugby league at the end of the 2018 NRL season.
