Joni went to Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis. After high school, she continued her art studies. She attended the John Herron Art Institute. This is where she learned many important art skills.

From the 1950s to the late 1970s, Joni T. Johnson worked in Indianapolis. She showed and sold her art in many galleries. She also helped start the Talbott Street Art Fair. This was a big event for artists.
