Who Was José Agustín?
José Agustín was born in Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico, on August 19, 1944. He became a very important voice in Mexican literature. He was known for his unique writing style.
His Journey as a Writer
José Agustín studied many interesting subjects. He learned about Classical Literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He also studied film directing and Dramaturgy, which is the art of writing plays.
How Did He Start Writing?
From 1962 to 1965, José Agustín joined a special writing workshop. This workshop was led by another famous writer, Juan José Arreola. It was here that José Agustín wrote his very first novel.
He wrote La Tumba (which means The Tomb) when he was only 19 years old. This book was a short story about a Mexican teenager. Older writers really liked it.
What Was His Style Like?
His most famous book is De Perfil (meaning Profile View). This book quickly tells the story of just three days in a character's life. Both La Tumba and De Perfil have a style that reminds some people of James Joyce's work.
José Agustín was part of a group of writers called La Onda. Onda is a Spanish word that means "wave." In this case, it was a slang word for new and popular ideas among young people. Writers in this movement often wrote about youth culture and modern life.
He often mixed what a character was saying with the story's narration. This means you might read a long conversation written as one sentence. You had to figure out who was speaking as you read. He also used a technique called stream of consciousness. This is where a writer shows a character's thoughts and feelings as they happen, like a continuous flow.
