José Barrionuevo (born 13 March 1942) is a Spanish politician. He served as the Minister of Interior for Spain from 1982 to 1988. This role is like being in charge of a country's police and safety.

Early Life and Education

José Barrionuevo was born in Berja, a town near Almería in Spain, in 1942. He went to college and studied two important subjects: law and journalism.

Political Career and Public Service

Barrionuevo became a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, a major political group in Spain. Before working for the national government, he was a leader in Madrid's city government. He also helped manage the city's police force.

Serving in the Spanish Parliament

José Barrionuevo was elected to the Parliament of Spain. He represented the city of Madrid for four terms. This means he helped make laws and decisions for the country.

Becoming Minister of Interior

On 3 December 1982, Barrionuevo was chosen to be the Minister of Interior. This is a very important job, overseeing the country's security and police. He took over from Juan José Rosón. The Prime Minister at the time, Felipe Gonzalez, was advised by Rosón to pick Barrionuevo for the role.

Security Plans and Changes

As Minister of Interior, Barrionuevo continued some of the security plans from the previous minister. In 1983, he helped create a new plan called Plan Zona Especial Norte (Plan ZEN).
