José Barrionuevo (born 13 March 1942) is a Spanish politician. He served as the Minister of Interior for Spain from 1982 to 1988. He faced legal issues related to efforts to combat a separatist group.

Early Life and Education

José Barrionuevo was born in Berja, a town near Almería in Spain, in 1942. He studied hard and earned degrees in both law and journalism. This education helped him prepare for a career in public service.

Political Career

Barrionuevo was active in student groups during his younger years. Later, he became a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, a major political party in Spain. He served as a deputy mayor in Madrid, where he was in charge of the city's police force.

He was elected as a member of the Spanish Parliament, representing Madrid for several terms. On 3 December 1982, he was chosen to be the Minister of Interior. This important role meant he was responsible for the country's security and police forces. He took over from Juan José Rosón.

As Minister of Interior, Barrionuevo continued many of the security plans already in place. In 1983, he and other security leaders developed a new plan called Plan Zona Especial Norte (Plan Special Zone North). This plan aimed to reduce the activities of a separatist group called ETA in the Basque region. He also worked to bring different police forces together under one security department.

Barrionuevo remained Minister of Interior until 12 July 1988. After that, he became the Minister of Transport, Tourism, and Communications. He was known as a "social democrat," which means he believed in a mix of government programs and a free economy to help society.

Personal Life

José Barrionuevo is married and has three children.
