José Iglesias de la Casa (born October 31, 1748, in Salamanca, Spain – died August 26, 1791, in Carbajosa de la Sagrada, Spain) was a Spanish priest and a talented poet. He studied at the famous University of Salamanca. In 1784, he became a priest in Madrid.

About José Iglesias de la Casa

José Iglesias de la Casa was well-known for his funny and clever poems. He wrote in a style similar to another famous Spanish writer, Francisco de Quevedo. His poems often made people laugh and think.

His Comedic Works

During his life, José Iglesias de la Casa published several comedic poems. Two of his popular works were "La Teclogia" and "La niñez Laureada". "La niñez Laureada" told the story of a very smart child. This child was so gifted that they took a university exam at just four years old!

Some of his writings were not approved by the Church at the time. Because of this, certain parts of his work were placed on a list of books that were not allowed.

Editions of His Poems

You can find many of his poems in different collections. Some well-known editions were published in Barcelona (1820 and 1837), Paris (1821), and Madrid (1841). A large collection of his works is available in the "Biblioteca de Autores Españoles" (Library of Spanish Authors), Volume LXI. This collection includes about 38 of his short, witty poems called letrillas. It also has satires (poems that make fun of things), epigrams (short, clever sayings), odes (poems praising something), anacreontics (poems about love and wine), and eclogues (poems about country life).

Some of his poems that had never been published before were shared by R. Foulche-Delbosc in the "Revue Hispanique" in 1895.
