José Luís Peixoto (born September 4, 1974) is a famous writer from Portugal. He writes many different kinds of stories, poems, and plays. His books have been translated into more than 30 languages, meaning people all over the world can read his work! He has been a full-time writer since 2001.
About José Luís Peixoto
José Luís Peixoto grew up in a small village called Galveias in Portugal. He lived there until he was 18 years old. He went to NOVA University Lisbon and studied modern languages and literature. After finishing university, he worked as a teacher for a few years. He taught in schools in Portugal and also in Cape Verde, an island country off the coast of Africa. In 2001, he decided to become a full-time writer.
His first book, called Morreste-me (which means You Died on Me), came out in 2000. Just one year later, in 2001, he won a very important award called the José Saramago Prize. He won it for his novel Nenhum Olhar. He was only 27 years old, making him the youngest person ever to win this prize! This award is given to the best novel written in Portuguese in the two years before.
