About José Luís Peixoto
José Luís Peixoto was born in a small village called Galveias in the Alentejo region of Portugal. He lived there until he was 18 years old.
Education and Early Career
After high school, he went to NOVA University Lisbon. There, he studied modern languages and literature. After finishing university, he worked as a teacher for a few years. He taught in different schools in Portugal and also in Cape Verde.
In 2001, José Luís Peixoto decided to become a professional writer. This means writing became his main job.
First Books and Big Awards
His first book, called Morreste-me (which means You Died on Me in English), came out in 2000. Just one year later, in 2001, he won a very important award. He received the José Saramago Prize for his novel Nenhum Olhar. He was only 27 years old, making him the youngest person ever to win this prize!
