José Luis González Novalín (born January 6, 1929 – died March 27, 2020) was a Spanish priest and a very important historian. He was in charge of a special Spanish church in Rome called Santa Maria in Monserrato degli Spagnoli from 1998 to 2010.

About José Luis González Novalín

José Luis González Novalín was born in Tresali, Asturias, Spain, on January 6, 1929. He became a priest in 1952. Later, he earned a special degree called a doctorate in Church History from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. This means he studied the history of the church in great detail.

From 1954, he taught at the Metropolitan Seminary of Oviedo for 45 years. A seminary is a school where people study to become priests. He also worked as a chaplain at two schools in Oviedo between 1955 and 1965. A chaplain is a priest who works with a specific group, like students. In 1962, he became the Canon Archivist of the Oviedo Cathedral. This means he was in charge of important historical documents and records at the cathedral.

In 1974, he moved to Rome. There, he became the vice-rector of the Santa Maria in Monserrato degli Spagnoli. This church is a special place for Spanish people in Rome. In 1998, he became the rector, which means he was the head of the church. He stayed in this role until he retired in 2010. After retiring, he returned to his home country and lived in Gijón.

As a historian, José Luis González Novalín was well-known for his studies. He researched the Spanish Inquisition, which was a powerful court in Spain's history. He also studied the Spanish church during the Reformation, a time when big changes happened in the Christian church.

Sadly, on March 21, 2020, he was admitted to a hospital in Oviedo because he had COVID-19. He passed away from the infection on March 27, 2020, at the age of 91, during the global pandemic.

José Luis González Novalín received several special awards and honors:
