Playing Career Highlights
José Manuel Ochotorena was born in San Sebastián, Spain. He started his football journey in the youth teams of Real Madrid, one of the biggest football clubs in the world.
Early Years at Real Madrid
Ochotorena first played professionally in the 1981–82 season. This was during a players' strike, so he got his chance while still part of the reserve team, Real Madrid Castilla. He became a regular starter in the 1985–86 season. That year, he helped Real Madrid win the La Liga title (Spain's top football league) and the UEFA Cup (a big European competition). However, he lost his starting spot the next season when Real Madrid signed another goalkeeper, Francisco Buyo.
Moving to Valencia
After leaving Real Madrid, Ochotorena joined Valencia CF. In his first year there, he won the Ricardo Zamora Trophy. This award is given to the goalkeeper with the lowest goals-to-games ratio in La Liga. He played well for three seasons at Valencia. He retired from playing football in 1998 when he was 37 years old.
International Experience
Ochotorena also played one game for the Spanish national team. He came on as a substitute for the last ten minutes of a friendly match against Poland in 1989. He was also part of Spain's squad for the 1990 FIFA World Cup, which is one of the biggest football tournaments in the world.
Coaching Career
After he stopped playing, Ochotorena became a goalkeeping coach. This means he trained other goalkeepers to help them improve their skills.
Coaching for Clubs and Country
He worked as a goalkeeping coach for both Valencia and the Spanish national team. In 2004, he moved to England to join Premier League club Liverpool. He worked there with manager Rafael Benítez.
Ochotorena returned to Valencia in 2007. He continued to work with the Spanish national team until February 2021.
