José Manuel Ochotorena Santacruz (born on January 16, 1961) is a Spanish former footballer. He played as a goalkeeper. After his playing career, he became a coach.

Playing Career: A Goalkeeper's Journey
Starting Out at Real Madrid
José Manuel Ochotorena was born in San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa, Spain. He started his football journey in the youth teams of Real Madrid. He first played professionally in the 1981–82 season. At that time, he was still part of Real Madrid's reserve team, Real Madrid Castilla.
He became a regular starter for Real Madrid in the 1985–86 season. That year, he helped the team win the La Liga title and the UEFA Cup. However, he lost his starting spot the next season when the club signed another goalkeeper, Francisco Buyo.
Moving to Valencia and Other Clubs
After leaving Real Madrid, Ochotorena joined Valencia CF. In his first year with Valencia, he won the Ricardo Zamora Trophy. This award is given to the goalkeeper with the lowest goals-to-games ratio in La Liga. He played well for Valencia for three seasons.
Later in his career, Ochotorena played for other teams. These included CD Tenerife, CD Logroñés, and Racing de Santander. He retired from playing football in 1998 when he was 37 years old.
Playing for Spain
Ochotorena also played one game for the Spanish national team. This was in a friendly match against Poland on September 20, 1989. He came on as a substitute for Andoni Zubizarreta. He was also part of Spain's squad for the 1990 FIFA World Cup.
Coaching Career: Helping Other Goalkeepers
Coaching at Valencia and with Spain
After he stopped playing, Ochotorena became a goalkeeping coach. He worked with goalkeepers at Valencia and also for the Spain national team.
Working with Liverpool
In July 2004, he joined Premier League club Liverpool. He worked there as a goalkeeping coach with manager Rafael Benítez.
Returning to Valencia
Ochotorena returned to Valencia in the summer of 2007. He continued to work with the Spain national team until February 2021.
