Paco Buyo's Club Career
Paco Buyo was born in a town called Betanzos in Spain. He started playing football when he was 14 years old for a local team named Ural. What's really cool is that he played in two different positions for Ural! He was both a goalkeeper and a right winger. During his year there, he was unbeatable as a goalie and also scored the most goals for his team. Talk about being a superstar!
Early Professional Teams
Paco's first team as a professional player was Mallorca, which was in the Tercera División (a lower league). After one season, he joined Deportivo de La Coruña. He stayed there until 1980, but he also had a short loan spell at Huesca. This happened while he was doing his military service in a town called Jaca.
He made his debut in La Liga during the 1980–81 season with Sevilla. From the very beginning, he was their main goalkeeper. He played in 248 matches for Sevilla and even got his first call-up to the Spanish national team during this time.
Joining Real Madrid
Paco Buyo's great performances at Sevilla caught the eye of Real Madrid, one of the biggest clubs in the world. They signed him in 1986 to replace their experienced goalkeeper, Miguel Ángel.
In his first season with Real Madrid, he played in all 44 league games. His very first game was a 3–1 win against Real Murcia. He was a key player in helping Real Madrid win the national league title that year. He stayed with the club in the Spanish capital until he retired in 1997, when he was 39 years old.
Winning Titles with Real Madrid
Paco Buyo had huge success with Real Madrid in Spain, winning six league titles and two Copa del Rey cups. However, they weren't as lucky in the European Cup (now known as the Champions League).
Still, he had a very memorable game in his first season against Michel Platini's Juventus in the 1986–87 European Cup. After both teams won one game each, the winner was decided by a penalty shootout. Paco Buyo was amazing, saving two of Juventus's shots, which helped Real Madrid win!
He won his first Ricardo Zamora Trophy in the 1987–88 season. This award is given to the goalkeeper who lets in the fewest goals in La Liga. He only conceded 23 goals in 35 league games that year. He won it again in 1991–92, letting in 27 goals in the same number of matches.
Later Years and Retirement
Real Madrid won two more league titles with Paco Buyo as their goalkeeper. One of these was in the 1994–95 season. During this season, he had an incredible streak of 709 minutes without letting in a single goal in the league! This was one of the longest streaks ever in Spanish football history. He also kept 17 clean sheets (games where the opponent doesn't score) that season.
In his final year with Real Madrid, the club won another league title. However, Paco didn't play much that season. He was the third-choice goalkeeper behind Bodo Illgner and Santiago Cañizares.
Paco Buyo retired having played 542 top-division games. This made him the third player with the most games played in La Liga history, behind another goalkeeper, Andoni Zubizarreta, and Eusebio Sacristán.
Paco Buyo's International Career
While Paco Buyo was playing for Deportivo, he was chosen to play for the Spain under-21 team. He also represented Spain at the 1980 Summer Olympics in football, where his team was eliminated in the first round.
For the main national team, Paco Buyo played seven times. He was part of the squad that finished second in the UEFA Euro 1984. His first game for the national team was on December 21, 1983. It was a famous match where Spain beat Malta by an amazing score of 12–1 during the qualifying stage for the Euro 1984.
Life After Football
After retiring from playing, Paco Buyo had a short career as a coach. He coached Real Madrid's youth teams and their third senior team. In the 2000–01 season, he was in charge of Castilla, which is Real Madrid's reserve team. He didn't coach again until 2008, when he managed Real Jaén's reserve team.
Besides coaching, Paco Buyo also worked as a sports analyst for Al-Jazeera. He shared his expert opinions on La Liga matches and the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament.
