Playing for Clubs
Paco Buyo was born in Betanzos, Spain. When he was 14, he started playing football for a local team called Ural. He played as both a goalkeeper and a right winger. During his year there, he was amazing: he didn't let any goals in as a goalkeeper and was also the team's top scorer!
Early Career and La Liga Debut
Buyo's first team as a senior player was Mallorca, which was in the Tercera División (a lower league). After one season, he joined Deportivo de La Coruña. He stayed there until 1980, with a short loan to Huesca while he was doing his military service.
He made his first appearance in La Liga, Spain's top football league, in the 1980–81 season with Sevilla. He quickly became their main goalkeeper. He played in 248 games for Sevilla and even got his first call-up to the Spanish national team.
Time at Real Madrid
Paco Buyo's great performances at Sevilla caught the eye of Real Madrid. They signed him in 1986 to replace their older goalkeeper. In his first season with Real Madrid, he played in all 44 league games. He helped the team win the national title that year. He stayed with Real Madrid until he retired in 1997, when he was 39 years old.
Buyo won many titles with Real Madrid, including six league titles and two Copa del Rey cups. However, they couldn't win the European Cup during his time. Still, he had a memorable game against Michel Platini's Juventus in the 1986–87 European Cup. After both teams won one game each, the winner was decided by a penalty shootout. Buyo saved two of Juventus's shots, helping Real Madrid win!
He won his first Ricardo Zamora Trophy in the 1987–88 season. This award is given to the goalkeeper who lets in the fewest goals in La Liga. He only conceded 23 goals in 35 league games that year. He won it again in 1991–92, letting in 27 goals in the same number of matches.
Real Madrid won two more league titles with Buyo as goalkeeper. In the 1994–95 season, he had an amazing streak of 709 minutes without letting in a goal in the league. This was the fifth-longest streak ever in the Spanish league! He also kept 17 clean sheets (games where the opponent doesn't score) that season. In his final year, Real Madrid won another league title, but he didn't play much as he was the third-choice goalkeeper.
Paco Buyo retired having played 542 top-division games. This was the third-highest number of games played by any player in La Liga at that time.
Playing for Spain
While playing for Deportivo, Paco Buyo was chosen for the Spain under-21 team. He also represented Spain at the 1980 Summer Olympics in football, where his team was eliminated in the first round.
For the main Spanish national team, Buyo played seven times. He was part of the squad that finished second in the UEFA Euro 1984 tournament. His first game for Spain was on December 21, 1983. It was a famous match where Spain beat Malta 12–1 in a qualifying game for Euro 1984.
After Retirement
After he stopped playing football, Paco Buyo had a short time as a coach. He coached Real Madrid's youth teams and their third senior team. In the 2000–01 season, he was in charge of Castilla, which is Real Madrid's reserve team. He returned to coaching briefly in 2008 with Real Jaén's reserve team.
Paco Buyo also worked as a sports expert for Al-Jazeera, a news channel. He helped cover La Liga matches and the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament.
