Early Life and Education
Soria was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, in 1958. He studied economics and business. He earned a degree in these subjects.
Political Career and Public Service
Soria started his career as a market analyst. He worked for the Spanish Embassy in Venezuela from 1980 to 1981. He then held various roles in the ministry of trade. He also taught economics in Madrid for several years.
Local and Regional Roles
Soria became the mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1995. He served in this role until 2003. In 1999, he was chosen to lead the Popular Party in the Canary Islands. He was also the president of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria from 2003 to 2007. This is like being the head of the island's government. He became a member of the regional parliament in 2003. From 2007 to 2010, he was the vice-president and treasury minister for the Canary Islands government.
National Government Role
In 2011, Soria was elected to the national parliament. He represented Las Palmas. On December 22, 2011, he was appointed Minister of Industry, Energy, and Tourism. He served in the cabinet led by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.
Resignation and Later Events
In April 2016, information came out about Soria and his family. It showed they had links to companies in other countries. These links raised concerns. After first denying any issues, he resigned as industry minister on April 15, 2016. He also stepped down from his party leadership role in the Canary Islands. He left his position as a member of parliament too.
In September 2016, the Spanish government suggested Soria for a job at the World Bank. This is a big international organization. However, many Spanish politicians and the public were concerned. Because of this pressure, he decided not to take the job.
