Cabral served as a top leader for the Dominican Republic. He was the first Supreme Chief from August 4, 1865, to November 15, 1865. Later, he officially became president from August 22, 1866, until January 3, 1868.

His family had strong ties to the region. José María Cabral was also the uncle of Marcos Antonio Cabral. Marcos Antonio Cabral later became a president of the Dominican Republic too.
