Coaching Career
After his playing days, Maguregui became a football coach. He started by managing his hometown club in amateur football. Then, he moved to Sestao Sport in his home region.
In 1972, he became the coach of Racing de Santander. He helped this team get promoted to the top division (La Liga) twice. He stayed with Racing de Santander for five years, which was a long time for a coach.
Maguregui was very good at helping teams move up to the top division. He led RC Celta de Vigo to promotion in 1978. He also helped AD Almería get promoted in 1979. With Almería, he did even better, leading them to a ninth-place finish in the top league the next season. This success led him to coach Español, a club he had played for.
After three seasons with Español, Maguregui returned to Racing de Santander. He helped them get promoted to the top league again in his first year back. He ended up coaching Racing de Santander for a total of nine years, more than any other manager in their history.
He coached Celta de Vigo again in the 1987–88 season in the first division. Later, he briefly coached Atlético Madrid in 1988. He then finished that season with Real Murcia, which was relegated from the top league.
Maguregui's last job as a professional coach was again with Celta de Vigo. He joined them late in the 1989–90 season, which ended with the team being relegated. He left the club 18 games into the next season.
