José Carlos de Araújo Nunes (born on March 7, 1977) is a former Portuguese football player. He was a central defender, which means he played in the defense to stop the other team from scoring goals.
Nunes played in 129 games in Portugal's top league, the Primeira Liga, scoring two goals. He played for teams like Salgueiros, Gil Vicente, and Braga. However, he spent most of his professional career in Spain with Mallorca. He joined them in 2006 and played in 258 official matches over eight seasons in La Liga, Spain's top football league.

Nunes's Football Journey
Nunes was born in Castelo de Paiva, Portugal. He started his football journey with smaller clubs in Portugal's second and third divisions. He made his first appearance in the Primeira Liga during the 2001–02 season with S.C. Salgueiros.
Moving to Top Teams
After playing well for two seasons with Gil Vicente FC, Nunes joined another top-flight team, S.C. Braga, in July 2004. In January 2006, he moved to Spain to play in La Liga for RCD Mallorca.
He played his first game for Mallorca on January 29, 2006. It was a tough start, as his team lost 0–3 at home to FC Barcelona. In his first full season with Mallorca, the 2006–07 campaign, he scored four goals.
Becoming a Team Leader
Nunes quickly became a key player for Mallorca. He was even chosen as the team's captain early in his time there. During the 2009–10 season, Mallorca won their first ten home league games. Nunes scored two goals that season, helping his team. One of his goals came in a 4–2 loss against Barcelona.
Overall, he scored four goals in 34 matches that season. Mallorca had a fantastic year, finishing fifth in the league table. They were even in fourth place until the very last minute of the final game!
Overcoming Injuries
In August 2011, Nunes suffered a serious knee injury during a friendly match against SSC Napoli. Doctors first thought he would be out for seven months, but he recovered much faster, in less than four months! He still managed to score two goals in 14 games during the 2011–12 season, helping Mallorca finish eighth in the league.
