José de Jesús Pimiento Rodríguez (born February 18, 1919 – died September 3, 2019) was an important Catholic leader from Colombia. He served as a bishop in different cities, including Montería and Garzón-Neiva. Later, he became the Archbishop of Manizales. In 2015, Pope Francis made him a cardinal, which is a very high rank in the Catholic Church.

Early Life and Church Career

José de Jesús Pimiento Rodríguez was born in a town called Zapatoca in Colombia. His parents were Agustín Pimiento Lizarazo and Salomé Rodríguez Castillo. He was baptized on March 4, 1919, shortly after he was born.

He always dreamed of becoming a priest. On December 14, 1941, his dream came true when he was ordained as a priest. He worked in several parishes, which are like local church communities, in places like Mogotes, San Gil, and Vélez.

Becoming a Bishop

In 1955, Pope Pius XII chose him to be an auxiliary bishop for the Diocese of Pasto. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop. He officially became a bishop on August 28, 1955.

Later, in 1959, Pope John XXIII appointed him as the bishop of the Diocese of Monteria. Then, in 1964, Pope Paul VI made him the bishop of the Diocese of Garzón-Neiva.

Important Church Meetings

Bishop Pimiento took part in the Second Vatican Council. This was a very important meeting of Catholic leaders from 1962 to 1965. They discussed how the Church could better connect with the modern world. He also served as the President of the Episcopal Conference of Colombia from 1972 to 1978. This group helps guide the Catholic Church in Colombia.

Archbishop of Manizales

On May 22, 1975, he became the Archbishop of Manizales. As archbishop, he worked hard to put the ideas from the Second Vatican Council into practice. He focused on helping families and young people. He also improved the training for new priests in the archdiocese.

Archbishop Pimiento also oversaw the repair of the cathedral of Manizales. Its bell towers were damaged in an earthquake in 1979. When the Nevado del Ruiz volcano erupted in 1985, he helped many people who had to leave their homes. He retired in 1996 but continued to work as a parish priest.

Becoming a Cardinal

On January 4, 2015, Pope Francis announced that he would make José de Jesús Pimiento Rodríguez a cardinal. This happened on February 14, 2015, just four days before his 96th birthday!

People who knew him said he really understood the spirit of the Second Vatican Council. Because of his age, he couldn't travel to the special ceremony in Rome. Instead, another Colombian cardinal, Rubén Salazar Gómez, gave him his cardinal's hat (called a biretta) and ring in Bogotá. He was given the title of Cardinal Priest of San Giovanni Crisostomo a Monte Sacro Alto.

Later Years and Passing

Cardinal Pimiento Rodríguez passed away on September 3, 2019. He was 100 years old. He died from heart failure at a retreat house in Floridablanca, near Bucaramanga. He had recently been in the hospital after a fall.

At the time of his death, he was the oldest member of the College of Cardinals. This group includes all the cardinals in the Catholic Church.
