José de Rezabal y Ugarte facts for kids

José de Rezabal y Ugarte (1747–1800) was a Spanish lawyer and judge. He was born in Vitoria on July 19, 1747, and passed away in Santiago, Chile, in 1800. He briefly served as the Spanish governor of Chile from May 24 to September 18, 1796. As a judge in Lima in 1781, he was involved in the legal proceedings against Túpac Amaru II after a major uprising.

Education and Career

José de Rezabal y Ugarte studied law at the University of Granada and the University of Valladolid. He was a leader at the Colegio Mayor del Arzobispo in Salamanca in 1766, 1768, and 1770. He also taught a type of Roman law at the University of Salamanca.

Working in Chile

As a doctor of law, he worked as a judge for the Real Audiencia of Chile between 1778 and 1780. He was very active in the colony. He helped oversee the building of the Santiago de Chile Cathedral. He also worked as a senior judge for properties of deceased people. He was a protector of a school called Convictorio Carolino and the Provincial Women's Hospital. He was known to have a small printing press for his own use. This was one of the first printing presses in Chile.

Working in Peru

In 1781, de Rezabal y Ugarte moved to Lima to work as a judge for criminal cases. Here, he led the legal case against Túpac Amaru II following a large uprising. The official decision from this case was shared in 1783. He also handled other related cases, including one against Manuel Antonio Figueroa.

While in Peru, de Rezabal y Ugarte held many important roles. He was the Royal Director of Studies at the University of San Marcos. He also became a judge and later the head judge of the new Real Audiencia of Cuzco in 1786. He was assigned to a complex legal case involving a mine in Huancavelica. This case focused on financial issues with the mine's director, Francisco Marroquín.

He got married in 1787 to Jane Catherine Micheo y Jiménez de Lobaton. After handling these important cases, he hoped to become a judge in Lima. When that didn't work out, he took the judge position waiting for him in Cuzco in 1791.

Time as Governor

During his short four months as governor, he continued a project started by the previous governor, Ambrosio O'Higgins. This project involved building defenses along the Mapocho River. It is believed that de Rezabal y Ugarte planted the poplar trees along these river defenses. This area became the only public walking path in Santiago for over 30 years.
