History of the University
The University of Valladolid (UVa) is a public university in Spain. It was started around 1241. It took over from studies that began at the University of Palencia. That university was founded by King Alfonso VIII of Castile between 1208 and 1212.
The University of Valladolid teaches higher education. It has seven campuses in four cities. These cities are Valladolid, Palencia, Soria, and Segovia. All of them are in the Castile and Leon region.
University Buildings
The first important building for the university was built in the late 1400s. This was after the university moved from its old location. It had a special courtyard called a cloister. This cloister had hallways around it and a chapel. You could enter the cloister through a Gothic-style doorway.
In the early 1700s, the university needed more space. So, they added another square-shaped cloister. This new part also had hallways.
From University Square, you can see the Baroque-style front of the building. It was designed by a monk named Fray Pedro de la Visitación and finished in 1715. This front has sculptures that show what subjects were taught inside. The middle part of the front has tall columns and a fancy top.
In 1909, people decided to tear down the old building. This included the 15th-century entrance. They wanted to build a new one designed by Teodosio Torres. But they kept the old Baroque front.
Torres's plan included two cloisters. A big staircase and entrance hall connected them. The new front facing Bookshop Street looked like a mix of old styles. It had parts of Plateresque, Baroque, and Neoclassical designs. There was also a clock tower on one corner.
The project had problems, and the old Baroque front was hard to fit in. In 1939, the building caught fire. To help connect the old front to the new building, Constantino Candeira designed a large staircase and entrance hall. This part was built in a grand, old-fashioned style after the war.
In 1968, the building was changed again. The second cloister was removed. A new five-story building was built for students. The original 1909 building by Torres was also changed. The observation tower and the large auditorium from 1909 were removed. The front facing Librería Street was updated. A new auditorium was built next to Fray Pedro's old front.
Culture and Arts
The university has many cultural groups. These include groups for music and theatre.
