Jos Luhukay's Playing Career

Jos Luhukay started his football journey at age 15. He joined his hometown club, FC VVV. In January 1981, he played his first league game against FC Den Bosch.

Then, Jos Luhukay moved from the Netherlands to Germany. He played for SV Straelen twice, from 1993 to 1995 and again from 1996 to 1998. In between these times, he played for KFC Uerdingen from 1995 to 1996. While at KFC Uerdingen, he played two games in Germany's top league, the Bundesliga. Jos Luhukay always played as a midfielder. Jos Luhukay's Managerial Career

Early Coaching Days

Just one month after he stopped playing, Jos Luhukay became a manager. His first managing job was at SV Straelen. Two years later, he returned to KFC Uerdingen as their manager. In 2002, he became an assistant coach for 1. FC Köln, a team in the Bundesliga.

In 2005, he took over as manager for SC Paderborn 07, a team in the 2. Bundesliga. They finished 9th in the 2005–06 season. He left the club on August 11, 2006.

Leading Borussia Mönchengladbach

On January 2, 2007, Jos Luhukay joined Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga. He started as an assistant manager to Jupp Heynckes. Heynckes resigned soon after, on January 31, 2007, because the team had not won in 13 games. Luhukay then became the main manager.

He could not prevent Gladbach from being moved down to a lower league. They finished 18th in the Bundesliga that season. However, in his first full season, Luhukay led Gladbach back to the top league. They won the 2. Bundesliga championship in the 2007–08 season with 66 points. On October 5, 2008, Luhukay was let go by Borussia Mönchengladbach. At that time, the team was 18th in the league.

Managing FC Augsburg

On March 23, 2009, Luhukay signed a contract to manage FC Augsburg. He was supposed to start on July 1. But after the previous manager, Holger Fach, was fired on April 15, 2009, Luhukay started his job earlier.

In his first full season, Luhukay guided Augsburg to 3rd place in the 2. Bundesliga. They played against Nürnberg in a play-off for promotion but lost. During this season, Augsburg also reached the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal cup, where they lost to Werder Bremen.

The next season, Augsburg earned promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time ever. They finished 2nd in the league. In their first season in the top league, Augsburg finished 14th. They avoided being moved down by 7 points. Luhukay resigned right after the last game of the 2011–12 season. He had been in charge for over three years.

Time at Hertha BSC

On May 17, 2012, Luhukay became the new manager of Hertha BSC. He officially started on July 1, 2012. His first game was a 2–2 draw against his old club, Paderborn 07.

In the 2012–13 season, Hertha set a new record for the most points in a 2. Bundesliga season. They won the league championship with 76 points and were promoted back to the top league. They also reached the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal cup. In Luhukay's second season with Hertha, they finished 11th in the Bundesliga.

On February 5, 2015, Hertha fired Luhukay. Pál Dárdai took over as manager. Hertha had lost their previous game and were 17th in the league at the time. They eventually finished 15th, just avoiding being moved down.

VfB Stuttgart and Sheffield Wednesday

On May 17, 2016, he was named the new head coach of VfB Stuttgart. However, after disagreements with the club chairman, Luhukay resigned on September 15, 2016. He had managed the team for five games, winning three and losing two.

On January 5, 2018, Luhukay became the new manager of Sheffield Wednesday. He was the first Dutch manager for the club. His first match was a 0–0 draw against local rivals Sheffield United. His first win came on January 16, 2018, in an FA Cup game. On December 21, 2018, Luhukay was fired after a tough period. The team was 18th in the league.

On April 10, 2019, Luhukay was announced as the new manager of FC St. Pauli. He left the club on June 29, 2020.

In March 2021, Luhukay took over as manager of VVV-Venlo. This was his first managing job in his home country. He left the club by agreement on May 30, 2022. The team finished 10th in the second tier league that season.
