He could not prevent Gladbach from being moved down to a lower league. They finished 18th in the Bundesliga that season. However, in his first full season, Luhukay led Gladbach back to the top league. They won the 2. Bundesliga championship in the 2007–08 season with 66 points. On October 5, 2008, Luhukay was let go by Borussia Mönchengladbach. At that time, the team was 18th in the league.

On March 23, 2009, Luhukay signed a contract to manage FC Augsburg. He was supposed to start on July 1. But after the previous manager, Holger Fach, was fired on April 15, 2009, Luhukay started his job earlier.
In his first full season, Luhukay guided Augsburg to 3rd place in the 2. Bundesliga. They played against Nürnberg in a play-off for promotion but lost. During this season, Augsburg also reached the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal cup, where they lost to Werder Bremen.
The next season, Augsburg earned promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time ever. They finished 2nd in the league. In their first season in the top league, Augsburg finished 14th. They avoided being moved down by 7 points. Luhukay resigned right after the last game of the 2011–12 season. He had been in charge for over three years.
