Josef Anton Maximilian Perty (born September 17, 1804, in Ornbau and died August 8, 1884, in Bern) was a German scientist. He loved studying nature, especially animals. He was known as a naturalist (someone who studies nature) and an entomologist (someone who studies insects).
Perty became a professor at the University of Bern. He taught about zoology (the study of animals) and comparative anatomy (looking at how different animals' bodies are built). Sometimes his first name is spelled "Joseph."

Early Life and Studies
Maximilian Perty was born in a town called Ornbau. He was very interested in science from a young age.
Becoming a Scientist
He went to school in Landshut to study natural sciences and medicine. In 1826, he earned his degree to become a doctor. After that, he got his PhD from Erlangen University. His special project for his PhD was about a type of beetle that no one had ever described before!
Teaching Career
In 1831, Perty started teaching at the University of Munich. He was a privat-docent, which means he was a private lecturer. He taught about zoology and general natural history.
From 1833 to 1876, Perty worked as a professor at the University of Bern in Switzerland. He spent many years teaching and researching there.
Discoveries and Research
Perty did important research on tiny creatures called arthropods. Arthropods are animals with outer skeletons and jointed legs, like insects and spiders.
Studying Brazilian Animals
He studied arthropods that were collected during a trip to Brazil. These animals were gathered by two explorers, Johann Baptist von Spix and Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius. Perty helped identify and describe many of these new species.
A Plant Named After Him
In 1862, a special honor was given to Perty. A type of plant was named after him! The botanical genus Pertya was named by a scientist named Carl Heinrich Bipontinus Schultz. This shows how important Perty's work was in the world of natural science.
Collections
Perty's amazing collections of specimens are kept in two places. You can find them at the University of Bern and the Zoologische Staatssammlung München (State Zoological Collection Munich). These collections help other scientists learn about the animals he studied.
