Early Days and FC Basel

Josef Hügi was born in Riehen, Switzerland, on January 23, 1930. He started playing football when he was young. He became more serious about the sport when he went to the University of Basel in the late 1940s.

His first professional team was FC Basel. He joined them in 1948. Seppe played for FC Basel for 14 years. During this time, he played over 300 matches. He scored an amazing 224 goals for the team. Fans often called FC Basel the RotBlau (RedBlue).

Later Clubs and Coaching

In 1962, Seppe Hügi moved to FC Zürich. However, he only played two games for them. After that, he spent the rest of his playing career in lower football divisions. He played for teams like FC Porrentruy and FC Laufen. After he stopped playing, he became a coach for FC Basel.

Playing for Switzerland

Seppe Hügi also played for the Switzerland national football team. He played 34 games for his country between 1951 and 1960. He scored 22 goals for the Swiss national team.

He was a star player in the 1954 FIFA World Cup. In that tournament, he scored six goals. This made him one of the top goal-scorers in the competition. He is still the all-time top goal-scorer for Switzerland in World Cup history.
