About Josef Josephi

His Early Life and Acting Career

Josef Ichhäuser was born on July 15, 1852, in Kraków, which is now part of Poland. His father was a cloth merchant.

Josef finished high school in 1871. Two years later, in 1873, he started his acting career in Vienna. His very first role was a small part as a soldier in a play called Fiesco by Friedrich Schiller.

To learn more about acting, he traveled to different cities. These included Nagykanizsa, Chemnitz, and Wrocław. In 1878, he joined the Ringtheater in Vienna. He then performed at the Carltheater in 1880. By 1883, he was acting at the famous Theater an der Wien.

Becoming a Star Singer

As Josef performed, he found great success in roles that involved singing. This led him to decide to become a professional singer.

He sang in many popular operettas. These included Eine Nacht in Venedig (A Night in Venice) and The Gypsy Baron by Johann Strauss II. He also performed in a funny one-act opera called V studni [cs] (In the Well) by Vilém Blodek.

Josef Josephi became part of a special group of performers. This group was called the Elitekorps (elite corps) of Viennese operetta. It meant they were the very best singers and actors in Vienna. He performed alongside other famous artists like Alexander Girardi, Karl Lindau, and Therese Biedermann [de].

In 1900, Josef Josephi moved to Berlin, Germany. From 1906, he spent two years performing at the Woltersdorff Theater [de]. After that, he worked for five years at the Metropol-Theater [de].
