Josefina Gómez Mendoza (born on June 1, 1942) is a Spanish geographer, writer, and a retired professor. She is known for her important work in geography and for leading major academic institutions.
From 2001 to 2005, she was the Rector (which is like the president) of the National University of Distance Education (UNED). She is also a respected member of two important groups in Spain: the Royal Academy of History and the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Josefina Gómez Mendoza's Career Journey
Josefina Gómez Mendoza studied at the Complutense University of Madrid. She earned a university degree in History in 1974. Later, she completed a higher degree, called a doctorate, in History and Geography from the same university.
Becoming a Professor
- In 1978, she became an assistant professor of geography after passing a special exam.
- By 1979, she was an associate professor.
- In 1981, she won a competition to become a full professor of Geography in Spain. This meant she was one of the top experts in her field.
From 1985 to 2012, she taught at the Autonomous University of Madrid as a Professor of Regional Geographical Analysis. This means she taught students how to study and understand different regions of the world from a geography point of view.
Special Honors and Roles
In June 2005, she received a special award called Doctor Honoris Causa from the Charles III University of Madrid. This is an honorary doctorate degree given to people who have made great contributions. She officially received this honor in February 2006.
In September 2012, she was named Chair Emerita at the Autonomous University of Madrid. This means she retired from her teaching position but still holds an honorary title because of her long and important service. In October of that year, she was also named Professor Emerita by the same university. In November 2012, she received another Doctor Honoris Causa from the École normale supérieure de Lyon in France.
Josefina Gómez Mendoza also served as an elected advisor to the Spanish government, called a State Councilor, from 2003 to 2008 and again from 2008 to 2013. Since 2008, she has been a member of the National Council of National Parks, helping to manage and protect Spain's beautiful natural areas.
From 1993 to 1997, she was the President of the Association of Spanish Geographers, leading the main group for geographers in Spain. Besides writing several books, she has also written articles for newspapers like El País.
