Josefina Gómez Mendoza, born on June 1, 1942, is a famous Spanish geographer, writer, and retired professor. She was the head (Rector) of the National University of Distance Education (UNED) from 2001 to 2005. She is also a respected member of two important groups: the Royal Academy of History and the Royal Academy of Engineering in Spain.

Josefina's Academic Journey
Early Studies and Teaching
Josefina Gómez Mendoza studied at the Complutense University of Madrid. She earned a special degree called a "licentiate" in Philosophy and Literature in 1974. She also completed her "doctorate" at the same university. A doctorate is the highest university degree you can get.
In 1978, she started working as an assistant professor of geography. The next year, she became an associate professor. In 1981, she won a competition to become a full professor of Geography in Spain.
Professor and University Leadership
From 1985 to 2012, Josefina was a Professor of Regional Geographical Analysis. She taught at the Autonomous University of Madrid.
In June 2005, she received a special honor. She was named a "Doctor Honoris Causa" by the Charles III University of Madrid. This is a fancy title given to people who have achieved great things. She officially received this honor in February 2006.
In September 2012, she was named "Chair Emerita" at the Autonomous University of Madrid. This means she was a very respected, retired professor. In October of that year, she became a "Professor Emerita" at the same university. Later, in November, she received another "Doctor Honoris Causa" from the École normale supérieure de Lyon in France.
Public Service and Contributions
Josefina Gómez Mendoza also served as an elective State Councilor for two terms. She was on this council from 2003 to 2008 and again from 2008 to 2013. She has also been a member of the National Council of National Parks since 2008.
From 1993 to 1997, she was the President of the Association of Spanish Geographers. This group helps geographers in Spain work together.
Besides writing many books, she has also written for newspapers. One of these was the well-known Spanish newspaper El País.
