Josep Yxart (1852–1895) was an important Spanish writer from Tarragona, Catalonia. He was known for being a literary critic, an essayist, and a translator. This means he wrote about books and plays, shared his thoughts in essays, and changed books from one language to another.

Yxart was a key figure in the Renaixença movement. This was a time in Catalonia when people worked to bring back and celebrate Catalan language and culture. He helped many young writers find their voice.

Yxart's Role as a Translator

Josep Yxart was skilled at translating books. He translated works by the famous German writer Friedrich von Schiller into Spanish. This helped Spanish readers enjoy Schiller's stories and plays.

Encouraging New Writers

Yxart was also a teacher and a mentor. He guided many future writers. Joan Sardà i Lloret and Narcís Oller were two of his students. He also encouraged other well-known artists and writers. These included Joan Maragall, Santiago Rusiñol, and Raimon Casellas. Yxart helped them start their writing careers.

His Published Works

Josep Yxart wrote several important books and essays. These works showed his deep understanding of literature and art.

  • Lo teatre català. Assaig històric-crític (1878): This book was a historical and critical look at Catalan theater.
  • Fortuny (1881): This work focused on the artist Fortuny.
  • El arte escénico en España (1894-1896): This was a study of stage art in Spain.
  • Obres catalanes de Josep Ixart (1896): This was a collection of his Catalan works. It was put together by his pupil, Narcís Oller, after Yxart passed away.
