Joseph & Mary is a Canadian movie from 2016. It's a drama based on stories from the Bible. The movie was directed by Roger Christian. Kevin Sorbo plays Joseph. The film shows the birth and early life of Jesus. This happens when King Herod the Great ruled the Roman Empire. The story also includes a character named Elijah, a rabbi who learns about forgiveness.

The Story of Joseph & Mary

A Difficult Time in Judea

The movie begins when King Herod the Great's tax collectors cause trouble. They harm a man named Aaron because he cannot pay his taxes. Aaron's friend, Elijah the rabbi, promises to protect Aaron's wife, Rebekah, and their children.

The Journey to Bethlehem

Meanwhile, Joseph and Mary travel to Bethlehem. They are going there for a census, which is like a count of all the people. While they are in Bethlehem, Mary gives birth to Jesus in a stable.

The Magi and King Herod

Later, three wise men, called the Magi, visit King Herod. They are looking for a special child. Herod tells them to go to Bethlehem, where old prophecies say the child will be born. He asks them to report back to him. The Magi find Joseph, Mary, and Jesus in the stable. But they do not return to Herod. Instead, they travel back to their own lands.

Escape to Egypt

Following Jewish law, Joseph and Mary take baby Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. They present him to Simeon and Anna the Prophetess. After this, they return to their home in Nazareth.

King Herod is angry that the Magi did not return. He orders his soldiers to harm all young boys under two years old. To keep Jesus safe, Joseph and Mary quickly flee to Egypt. During this time, Rebekah's newborn child is also harmed. A Roman soldier named Tiberius is involved in this sad event. Elijah is very upset, and Rebekah vows to get revenge on Tiberius.

Return to Nazareth and a Lesson in Forgiveness

Years pass, and Joseph, Mary, Elijah, and Rebekah return to Nazareth. Tiberius, now a tax collector, visits the town. Rebekah recognizes him. She wants Elijah to get revenge on Tiberius. But Elijah starts to think about forgiveness. Joseph and his twelve-year-old son, Jesus, also suggest that forgiveness is better than revenge.

One day, Tiberius recognizes Rebekah and attacks her. She scratches his face, and he drops his sword. Elijah picks up the sword but throws it off a cliff. Tiberius chases after it and falls to his death.

Joseph's Final Moments

As Joseph is dying, he has a vision of his young son. He tells this vision of Jesus to leave Nazareth with Mary. He then has another vision, seeing his adult son being harmed. Mary visits him before he passes away.
