Joseph Brandreth was born in Ormskirk, Lancashire, England, in 1746. He studied medicine and earned his M.D. degree from Edinburgh University in 1770. After that, he worked as a doctor in his hometown. Around 1776, he moved to Liverpool and took over the medical practice of Dr. Matthew Dobson.

In 1780, Dr. Brandreth joined the staff of the Liverpool Infirmary. He was the first doctor in Liverpool to understand that applying cold water could help people with fever. He wrote about this treatment in a paper. He also helped start the Dispensary in Liverpool in 1778. For 30 years, he worked hard at the Infirmary, which had 84 beds. He and other senior doctors gave their services for free.

Dr. Brandreth lived in Church Street in Liverpool for some time. He became a very successful and popular doctor. He was known for reading a lot and having an amazing memory. He believed his good memory came from relying on it instead of taking notes. He passed away in Liverpool on April 10, 1815.

Another famous doctor in Liverpool at that time was James Currie. Both Dr. Brandreth and Dr. Currie were honored with the "freedom of the borough" in 1802. This was a special award given to important citizens. Dr. Brandreth is remembered as one of Liverpool's top doctors in the late 1700s.
