Joseph Caryl was an important English minister who lived from November 1602 to February 1673. He was known as an "ejected minister" because he lost his job after a big change in England's government and church rules.

Early Life and Career

Joseph Caryl was born in London, England. He went to Merchant Taylors' School and then studied at Exeter College, Oxford. After finishing his education, he became a preacher at Lincoln's Inn, a famous place in London.

Role in Parliament and Church

Caryl often gave sermons to the Long Parliament, which was England's main governing body at the time. In 1643, he became a member of the Westminster Assembly. This was a group of important religious leaders who worked to reform the Church of England.

He was even asked by Parliament to attend King Charles I when the king was held at Holmby House. Later, in 1650, Caryl traveled with another important religious leader, John Owen, to Scotland to join Cromwell, a powerful military and political leader.

Later Years and Ministry

After the English Restoration, when the king returned to power in 1660, many ministers like Caryl were "ejected" from their churches. This meant they were forced to leave their official positions because they didn't agree with the new church rules. In 1662, Joseph Caryl was ejected from his church, St Magnus-the-Martyr, near London Bridge.

Even though he was ejected, Caryl continued to lead a group of independent church members in London. He served this congregation until he passed away in March 1673. After his death, John Owen took over his role.

His Writings

Joseph Caryl was known for his deep religious understanding and knowledge. His most famous work is a long commentary on the Book of Job from the Bible. A commentary is a detailed explanation and study of a text.

His commentary was published in many parts between 1651 and 1666. Later, it was put together into two large books in 1676 and 1677.

His Family

Joseph Caryl was married and had a daughter named Elizabeth. Elizabeth married a merchant named Benjamin Shute. Their son, John Shute, later became a lawyer and theologian. He changed his name and became known as John Barrington, 1st Viscount Barrington.
