Becoming a Soldier: Joseph Conrad's Early Career
Joseph Conrad started his military journey at a young age. On April 28, 1807, when he was 18, he joined a top military school. It was called the École Spéciale Impériale Militaire. This was the best military academy in France at that time.
In just one year, Conrad quickly moved up the ranks. He became a Corporal, then a Sergeant, and then a Sergeant-major. This showed he was a very promising soldier.
Fighting for France: Napoleonic Wars
On March 25, 1809, Joseph Conrad became a Second Lieutenant. He joined the 28th Light Infantry Regiment. Soon after, his regiment went to Germany to fight.
He fought in the Battle of Essling. In this battle, his group was part of a larger army led by Marshall Jean Lannes. Conrad was hurt in the leg during this fight.
The next year, he went to Spain. There, he was wounded a second time at the Battle of Fuentes de Orono. In 1812, he was promoted to Lieutenant.
Wounds and Awards: A Brave Soldier's Story
In 1813, Conrad moved to a bigger army called the Grande Armée in Saxony. He received another injury there, a gunshot wound in his left shoulder.
For his bravery, he received a very special award. It was called the Légion d'honneur. He got this award twice on October 8, 1813. Just eight days later, he was captured in Leizpeg.
Conrad returned to France in September 1814. He joined the 13th Light Infantry Regiment. He served there until 1815. This was when Napoleon gave up his power, and Conrad left the army.
Returning to Service: After Napoleon
Joseph Conrad returned to the army in 1816. He served in areas near the Rhine River. He worked as an adjutant, which means he helped a higher-ranking officer. He continued his military service during this time.
