Joseph Grove (1699–1764) was an English writer known for his biographies. He wrote books about the lives of important people in history.
About Joseph Grove's Life
Joseph Grove was born in 1699 in Chipping Norton, a town in Oxfordshire, England. His family had lived there for a long time. His mother, Sarah, passed away in 1739 at age 73. His father, Theophilus, died in 1740 at age 83.
Joseph worked as a lawyer, also called an attorney. He became quite wealthy from his work. He owned land in different places. He also had a nice home in Richmond, Surrey, which he called "the Belvidere." When he was in London, he stayed at a house in St. Clement Danes.
After working as a lawyer for many years, Joseph Grove retired. He then started writing books. He enjoyed adding pictures to his books, especially copper-plate illustrations. Sometimes these pictures were a bit funny without meaning to be, which helped make his serious books more interesting!
Joseph Grove passed away on March 27, 1764. He was buried in Richmond Church.
Joseph Grove's Writings
Joseph Grove wrote several books, mostly biographies. Here are some of his works:
- The History of the Life and Times of Cardinal Wolsey (1742–1744): This four-volume book was about the life of Cardinal Wolsey, an important figure in English history. It also included stories about other famous people from that time.
- The Life of Henry VIII. By Mr. William Shakespear (1758): In this book, Grove added his own historical notes and thoughts to Shakespeare's play about King Henry VIII. He even planned to do the same for Shakespeare's other history plays.
- Two Dialogues in the Elysian Fields between Cardinal Wolsey and Cardinal Ximenes (1761): This book featured imaginary conversations between two famous cardinals, Wolsey and Ximenes. It also included historical facts about Wolsey's colleges and the town of Ipswich.
- The Lives of all the Earls and Dukes of Devonshire (1764): This book was about the lives of the Cavendish family, who were important nobles.
Joseph Grove also planned to write other books, including a full history of King Henry VIII. He also wanted to publish more pieces about Cardinal Wolsey. He always intended to fill his books with interesting copper-plate pictures.
