José María Lacalle García, known as Joseph M. Lacalle in the United States, was a talented musician. He was born on November 17, 1859, and passed away on June 11, 1937. He played the clarinet, wrote music, and led orchestras. He is most famous for creating the song "Amapola".

Life and Music Career
José María Lacalle was born in Cadiz, Spain. In 1884, he moved to the United States. He traveled from Havana, Cuba, to New York City by ship.
Playing in Famous Bands
Once in the U.S., Lacalle played woodwind instruments in many popular bands. Some of these included the famous John Philip Sousa Band and the Patrick Gilmore Band. He also played with the 7th Regiment Band and the Columbia Spanish Band.
Leading His Own Groups
Lacalle also led his own musical groups. He conducted the Lacalle Band and the 23rd Regiment Band. From 1917 to 1929, he directed instrumental groups for Columbia Records. He also helped with early recordings for other music companies.

Lacalle wrote many songs and marches. Some of his well-known works include:

The Story of "Amapola"
His song "Amapola" was first written with Spanish words. It was also performed as an instrumental piece. In the early 1940s, new English words were added by Albert Gamse. Many artists then recorded the song. Jimmy Dorsey's version became a number one hit on the Billboard charts. "Amapola" also reached number one on the "Your Hit Parade" radio show in 1941.
Later Life and Influence
Later in his life, Lacalle worked as a music critic for Columbia Phonograph Company. He also started the Spanish Theater Company in Brooklyn. Through this company, he introduced American audiences to Zarzuelas, which are Spanish musical plays. He played an important role in sharing Spanish and Cuban music with people in the U.S. He passed away in Brooklyn, New York in 1937 when he was 76 years old.
