Joseph Lambton (1569–1592) was an English Catholic priest. He is honored as a Catholic martyr. A martyr is someone who dies for their religious beliefs. He was declared "Blessed" by the Pope in 1987. This means the Catholic Church recognizes him as a holy person.

Joseph Lambton's Story
Early Life and Education
Joseph Lambton was born in 1569. He was the second son of Thomas Lambton and Katharine Birkhead. His family lived in Malton-in-Rydale, Yorkshire, England. His uncle, George Birkhead, was an important church leader.
In September 1584, Joseph went to the English College. This college was in Reims at the time. It was a place where English Catholics could study to become priests. At this time, laws in England made it dangerous to be a Catholic priest.
Becoming a Priest
In August 1589, Joseph moved to the English College, Rome. He was very eager to return to England. He wanted to serve the Catholic community there. He finished his studies quickly.
Joseph became a priest on March 28, 1592. This happened in a famous church in Rome called the Lateran Basilica. He was a little younger than the usual age for priests. But he was given special permission.
Returning to England and Arrest
Joseph Lambton left Rome for England on April 22, 1592. He planned to work in an area called Westmorland. However, he was arrested soon after landing in Newcastle.
He was put on trial with another man, Edward Waterson. They were charged under a law called the Jesuits, etc. Act 1584. This law made it illegal for Catholic priests to be in England.
His Final Days
Joseph Lambton was sentenced to death. His execution was set for a Monday morning. This was done to avoid large crowds. It was decided that Joseph would be executed alone.
He died on July 31, 1592, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He was executed for being a Catholic priest in England. People at the time saw him as a brave martyr.
Veneration
Joseph Lambton was officially recognized as "Blessed" by Pope John Paul II. This happened on November 22, 1987. He is one of the Eighty-five martyrs of England and Wales. These are people who died for their Catholic faith in England and Wales.
