Who Was Joseph Oklahombi?

Early Life and Joining the Army

Joseph Oklahombi was born on May 1, 1895, in Bokchito, Oklahoma. This area was part of the Choctaw Nation in what was then called Indian Territory. He joined the United States Army and served in Company D, First Battalion, of the 141st Regiment. This regiment was part of the Thirty-sixth Infantry Division during World War I.

A Heroic Act in World War I

On October 8, 1918, Private Oklahombi was fighting in Saint-Étienne, France. He and 23 other soldiers faced a tough enemy position. They bravely attacked, capturing 171 German soldiers and killing about 79 more. After this amazing feat, they held their position for four days. During this time, they were under constant attack from the enemy.

Chief Gary Batton of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma shared more details about Oklahombi's incredible bravery. He explained that Joseph Oklahombi moved 200 yards across open ground, facing heavy artillery and machine gun fire. He then rushed a machine gun nest all by himself and captured one of the guns. For four days, he used that captured gun against the enemy, keeping them under fire. He did all this without food or water, killing many enemy soldiers until the rest finally surrendered.

Awards and Recognition

For his extraordinary bravery, Joseph Oklahombi received several important awards. He was given the Silver Star with Victory Ribbon from the United States. He also received the Croix de Guerre from France. This French award was presented to him by Marshal Henri-Philippe Petain, who was a top commander in the French Army.

At the time of World War I, members of the Choctaw Nation were not officially U.S. citizens. This makes Oklahombi's service and recognition even more remarkable.

A Hero's Legacy

Even though Joseph Oklahombi received high honors, many believe he deserved even more. Chief Gary Batton has been working to see the Medal of Honor presented to Oklahombi. The Medal of Honor is the highest military award for bravery in the United States. Many feel it is a long-overdue recognition for his incredible actions.

Joseph Oklahombi was married and had a son. Sadly, he died on April 13, 1960. He was hit by a truck while walking along a road. He was buried with full military honors at Yashau Cemetery in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. His story continues to inspire people as a testament to courage and dedication.
