Joseph Patrick O'Neil (born December 27, 1863 – died July 27, 1938) was an important officer in the United States Army. He served in the army during the late 1800s and early 1900s, fighting in major wars like World War I.

Early Life and Army Start

Joseph O'Neil was born in Brooklyn on December 27, 1863. He went to college at the University of Notre Dame and graduated in 1883.

In 1884, he joined the army. He was assigned to the 14th Infantry Regiment. His first station was at the Vancouver Barracks. From there, he explored the area around Mount Olympus in 1885. He also went to the Infantry Cavalry School at Fort Leavenworth, graduating in 1887.

Exploring Mount Olympus

Joseph O'Neil was a member of the Oregon Alpine Club. He really wanted to explore Mount Olympus. Finally, General John Gibbon gave permission for an expedition. In the summer of 1890, O'Neil led this trip. On September 22, 1890, his team reached the top of the southern peak of Mount Olympus.

Military Service and Conflicts

In 1892, O'Neil was moved to Fort Custer. He was part of the 25th Infantry Regiment. With this group, he fought in the Spanish–American War and was stationed in Cuba. After that, he served in other places like the Philippines and Alaska.

Mexican Border and Panama

Later, O'Neil was stationed at the Mexican border. This was during General Pershing's Pancho Villa Expedition. In 1916, he took command of the 21st Infantry Regiment. This included their duties during the Panama–California Exposition.

World War I Service

When the United States joined World War I in August 1917, Joseph O'Neil was promoted. He became a brigadier general in the National Army. During the war, he commanded the 179th Infantry Brigade.

After the war ended, he went back to his original rank of colonel. He retired from the army in 1926. However, in 1930, his rank of brigadier general in the U.S. Army was officially restored.

Later Life

Joseph O'Neil married Nina Troup on January 15, 1891. After he retired from the army, he lived in Portland. He passed away on July 27, 1938.
