Joseph Raulin (1708–1784) was an important French doctor. He was known for his work with women's health and for advising the king of France.
A Royal Doctor
Joseph Raulin was born in a place called Ayguetinte in 1708. He passed away in Paris on April 12, 1784. He was a special kind of doctor called an obstetrician, which means he helped women during pregnancy and childbirth. He also became the personal doctor for King Louis XV of France!
Before working for the king, Raulin studied medicine at the University of Bordeaux. After he became the king's doctor, he also got another important job: a royal censor. This meant he reviewed books and writings to make sure they were okay to be published.
Because of his high position, he was also put in charge of France's mineral waters. These were special natural springs believed to have healing powers. He had to make sure they were used correctly.
Raulin was a very respected scientist. In 1763, he became a member of the famous Royal Society in London. This is a group of top scientists from around the world. From 1776, he also taught medicine as a professor at the Collège Royal.

Joseph Raulin wrote many books about medicine. Some of his books focused on gynaecology, which is the study of women's health, and obstetrics, which is about childbirth. These books were so important that they were translated into different languages.
He also wrote a lot about the mineral waters found in France. One of his most famous works was a detailed description of the mineral waters sold in Paris, explaining their medical and chemical properties. He even wrote instructions for midwives in the provinces to help them with childbirth.
